Tofanelli Estate Charbono 2016 - K. Laz Wine Collection

Vince Tofanelli is not just a great grower of heritage varietals but also a great winemaker. Last week's wildfires impacted his winery and vineyard. They lost their 120-year old barn and home on their Calistoga property. Since 1928, they have been producing extremely limited production from their old and gnarled vines. The methods they still use were once prevalent throughout the valley; no irrigation (not even a drip line to be seen), with an organic philosophy (they never jumped on the 'bandwagon' of post-war pesticides). Known for their Zinfandel, they also grow rare and unusual varietals such as Charbono, Sauvignon Musqué, Semillon, Petite Sirah, Carignane, Grenache, Mondeuse Noir and Cinsault. A variety you don’t see very often, the "2016 Charbono is certainly noteworthy and possibly one of the top examples I’ve tasted. Beautiful blue fruits, white flowers, and graphite notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied red that has fabulous elegance and class. With fine tannins and terrific balance, it’s a great wine, and I suspect it will keep for over a decade." 94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck. 126 cases were produced.
