Winemaker Julien Fayard and Vineyard Manager Steve Matthiasson have brought Purlieu into a class that includes some of the great Cabs of Napa Valley. Getting his winemaking start at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild and Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux, Julien then came to California and worked with Philippe Melka as the director of winemaking for all of Philippe’s projects. This 2012 Beckstoffer ToKalon Cabernet showcases the best of both worlds with this Grand Cru vineyard site – there’s power and finesse in this new offering. Dark red and purple fruit marry with exotic baking spice and subtle mineral notes laced throughout. It is a great representation of the potential that this vineyard site offers.
