It had been a long time since we tasted wines from Gemstone. The wines were originally made by Philippe Melka when Paul and Suzie Frank founded the winery. After Amy and Adam Dornbusch acquired the 16-acre vineyard along Silverado Trail in Yountville in 2008, they brought on Thomas Rivers Brown to be their full-time winemaker. Shortly thereafter, they decreased production to focus on producing wines at an elevated level. Named after their first daughter, Ruby, the Ruby Barrel Selection is comprised of just 3 to 4 barrels that are chosen for their complete expression of their estate and the best representation of the vintage. “Deep purple, with a stunning nose of crème de cassis, white flowers, chocolate, blueberries, and tobacco, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Gemstone Vineyard Ruby Barrel Selection hits the palate with full-bodied richness, an incredible sense of purity and elegance, fine tannins, and a great finish.
