2022 LAZ Offering
I’m excited to officially share the release of the 2022 LAZ Cabernet Sauvignon—a vintage that marks a significant new chapter for LAZ. After the loss of the 2020 vintage from the wildfire, this release feels especially meaningful, as it also begins my dedicated grower partnership with Sylvan Lake Vineyard, sourcing Cabernet Sauvignon exclusively from this high-elevation site on Howell Mountain. My winemaker, Celia Welch, and I believe Sylvan Lake is truly special. The 4.5-acre vineyard, planted in 2014, yielded about 2.25 tons per acre in 2022. All fruit was hand-picked, with Celia’s precise harvest decisions to ensure only clusters showing balanced ripeness and acidity made it into the tank. A small addition of Malbec and Merlot rounds out the blend, enhancing depth, structure, and complexity in what we believe is one of our most expressive vintages to date.
We made just 75 cases and 18- 1.5L magnum bottles of this limited production and I can’t wait for you to experience it.
PRAISE FOR LAZ 2022
95 Points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Kerrin Laz's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon features generous aromas of blueberry cobbler, with just enough savory hints to avoid being overly confectionary. Full-bodied and supple, there's no denying its ripeness, but it's not jammy or sweet, balanced by nuances of licorice and mocha on the lingering finish. I don't think I'd cellar it for more than a decade or so, but it offers delicious drinking over the near term. Unfortunately, quantities of this wine—sourced primarily from Howell Mountain and made by Celia Welch (Scarecrow, Barbour, et al.)— are lamentably tiny (75 cases). Your best (only?) chance to obtain some is direct from the source.
